Family Health and Fitness Day

Each June, the second Saturday of the month is named Family Health and Fitness Day by the National Recreation and Park Association. As a proud supporter of Family Health and Fitness Day, Five Star Urgent Care has comprised a list of easy-to-implement tips to help you and your family stay fit and healthy throughout the year.

Take the Work out of your Workout

Carving out at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Make the whole family move by finding fun activities that you can all enjoy –together. From games of tag in the backyard to YouTube yoga sessions in the living room, design an activity schedule that is tailored to your family’s schedule.

Make Time for Family Meals

As schedules get crowded with school and sporting events, try to find time in the week to share at least one meal together as a family. Choose meals that include fresh vegetables, are low in fat and have a healthy portion of lean protein. Make each meal a learning experience, educating children on the importance of proper nutrition.

Hike together

Sunnier days and warmer weather are upon us. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and explore popular trails and hiking spots in your community as a family – four-legged family members included. Dedicate at least one weekend a month to exploring a new spot in or around your community. If your area doesn’t have a trail to venture, prepare a fun-filled day at your local park to enjoy the outdoors.

Tip: Use a DEET insect repellent to keep pesky bugs at bay, preventing itching and illnesses.

Snack Smart

Salty, fried snacks are quick and easy grabs, but they aren’t the healthiest for your family. Substitute your go-to bag of potato chips or corn-based snack for a healthy alternative. Fresh fruit and vegetables can satisfy your cravings while providing vital nutrients. Adding in a variety of low-fat spreads, such as hummus and yogurt-based dips, are easy ways to appease even the pickiest of pallets.
