With winter in the rear-view mirror and spring break right ahead of us, some of you may be packing your bags for vacations both inside and outside the country. Depending on where you travel, there are a number of different safety precautions that you should take to make sure you have a safe and healthy trip.
For those who are traveling domestically:
- Protect your skin: Always apply sunscreen that has a rating of at least SPF 30. While the sun may not feel as hot as summer, it still exposes you to UV radiation during the spring and causes complications. Spring breakers with fair skin should consider a higher level of SPF.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. For those consuming alcohol, make sure it is done responsibly and in moderation.
- Follow the rules: Whether it be at an amusement park or at a beach, carefully follow the rules and guidelines of your destination. For those visiting theme parks, be sure to carefully read and observe the restrictions for each ride to make sure you and fellow riders are safe.
- Stay clean: Be sure to wash your hands when and where you can. If you are unable to do so, pack a small bottle of hand sanitizer to clean while on the go.
For those traveling abroad:
- See your doctor early: Be sure to visit your health care provider 4-6 weeks in advance to make sure you have the proper vaccinations and medications that you may need before traveling.
- Pack medications: In addition to your prescription medications, be sure to pack common over the counters drugs, such as antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, cough medications, ibuprofen and antihistamines, to treat any minor bumps or scrapes that happen throughout your trip.
- Be aware of health risks: Depending on where you are traveling to, certain areas of the globe possess different conditions and illnesses not seen in the United States, such as Zika and malaria. Contact your physician to learn more about the health risks of your destination.
- Dine carefully: To avoid a variety of gastrointestinal ailments, only eat local cuisine that is cooked thoroughly and served hot. Also, stay away from ice that is made with tap water and drink only bottled water.
